Interview with Estilo de Vida Kitesurf
1. What is the name of your school? Tell us how it started and who is behind it. We founded Kitesurf Experience after years of running kitesurf camps and schools worldwide. We wanted to create a YouTube channel dedicated to kiteboarding and travel. Over a year ago, we bought Estilo de Vida Kitesurf School, captivated by its history and the kitesurf spot in Portillo. Founded by Leif Leriche, Estilo de Vida was the first kitesurfing school in Las Terrenas, training all the local kitesurfers and supporting the community. It was also the first school to receive an official tourism license for water sports instruction. Now we also teach Wing Foil and E-foil, and offer many other services to provide a complete experience.
2. What levels of kitesurfing courses do you offer, and what are the prerequisites for each level? We offer classes for all levels, from beginners to those seeking refresher courses. We also provide special training sessions with BB communication devices for independent riders looking to improve their skills or learn new tricks.
3. What are the typical wind and sea conditions in Las Terrenas, and how do they influence kitesurfing classes?
At our spot in Portillo, the wind typically blows between 13 and 18 knots, with flat water perfect for all levels. Further out, there is a pleasant swell. The wind here is light and constant, unlike places with gusts, making it ideal and safe for teaching.
4. What safety measures do you implement during classes to ensure the students' safety?
Safety is our top priority. Our goal is to make you an independent and safe kitesurfer, teaching you all the necessary safety steps and rules, including kite launching, board recovery, and self-rescue. You will receive a helmet with a radio, a flotation vest, lycra, harness, and leash. During the first hours, you will use short lines for less power and more safety. We also provide new equipment and are fully insured. Independent riders receive a clear explanation of the spot and full assistance.
5. What type of kitesurfing equipment do you provide for students, and is it included in the course cost?
We offer new equipment from North Kiteboarding, including kites from 5m to 17m, bars with short and long lines, and various boards from 133 cm to larger sizes for beginners and light wind conditions. We also provide new helmets and harnesses from Mystic in various sizes. All equipment, including insurance, is included in the lesson cost.
6. Do you offer any type of certification upon completing the course, and what is the average duration of the courses?
We offer IKO certifications even after a few hours of lessons. To become an independent kitesurfer, you should plan for 8 to 12 hours of lessons, tailored to your pace and needs.
7. What makes Playa Portillo special for learning kitesurfing?
The constant wind, flat water, and wide white sand beach offer excellent conditions for beach lessons and easy progression.
8. What can our followers expect from a kitesurfing class here?
Our passionate and dedicated team offers a complete and enriching kitesurfing experience, sharing knowledge and expert tips. We also offer Wing Foil and eFoil for new sensations on the water, along with many other services.
9. What are the benefits of learning kitesurfing with you?
Joining our community means having access to an online coach for advice and support, before or after your lessons, wherever you are. Our goal is to offer the best experience and service to our clients, including private parking, showers, bathrooms, a pool, and a restaurant at the Empyrean Wellness Boutique Hotel within the Residencia Portillo. Enjoy a welcome drink and exclusive access to the kite beach. In case of no wind, we offer E foiling or a wide range of activities. Ask us about boat excursions or any type of adventure, we've got you covered.
10. Do you have any advice for those interested in trying kitesurfing for the first time?
We always start by asking: "Do you want to try kitesurfing or become an independent kitesurfer?" Based on your answer, we tailor our teaching to meet your goals, whether it's for fun or to become independent as quickly as possible.
11. How can interested people find you?
